I was just reading John Frame's "Doctrine of God" and on page 725 he notes that Colin Gunton was part of a resurgence of social trinitarianism, mostly in his book "The Promise of Trinitarian Theology". I have always known social trinitarianism to be very philosophical. Is Gunton to be read this way? Thanks.

Gunton invests heavily in the tri-personal nature of God, and so at least looks like a social trinitarian - or can be mistaken for one. I wouldn't label him as such. Eve Tibbs just submitted a PhD thesis at Fuller entitled "Trinity, Truth and Communion in the Theology of John Zizioulas and Colin Gunton" and from the summary she gave me, she concluded that Gunton was not a social trinitarian. I'll let her give her defense.

Jordan, I just put up a new post called 'I have a question . . .' and given it a higher profile than this one (which never really took off). Could you re-post your question there? Then I'll re-post my comment and see if I can coax Eve to make an appearance. There are a number of people who have your same question.

Nate

I'd like to talk about the specifics of Gunton's trinitarian epistemology and how it can be played out in practical ways.

Thanks, Eli
